Fun Monday - mastheads and menus

Funmondaylogo There's no mystery to the name of my blog, I like barbies, dingoes and puns. There is however, a raging debate as to the quote used for the mondegreen I created for my blog name (ie. whether it's 'took', 'got' or 'ate'), and the argument is not just limited to my blog [1].

The question (which will not be debated here) is whether you choose to go with the pop culture reference and cite the words of Meryl Streep, who in a stunning display of phonetic ignorance and filmstar arrogance [2], managed somehow to combine South African and New Zealand accents, call it Australian and utter the phrase "aye deengo tuck moiy baaayyybee" in the film "Evil Something-or-other"; or whether you go with the actual quote. The "ate" option isn't really considered here, as it's used very rarely, most notably as Ozzie's band's name in Buffy.

Being Australian, I see this whole sad, but very interesting story as part of our history, and just another some third rate move [3]. So I chose to go with what Lindy C actually said to a reporter outside the courthouse in Darwin [4] which was, in part, "...a dingo's got my baby", rather than use a line from a script that some whiny, overpaid, money grabbing, no talent writer came up with. Hence the name of the blog is A Dingo's got my Barbie. The photo of Sorority Slut B@rbie being eaten by a dingo was made by Dirty Uncle Mark.

As for part two, this is  my favourite dish. But my favourite meal is Sushi...

Sushiplatter

Strictly speaking, this is a photo of Nigiri, which is fish on balls of rice and wasabi. Sushi is actually the generic term for this type of finger food. Maki are the rolls wrapped in nori, Sashimi is just the fish by itself, and Unari (my wife's favourite) is rice in a fried tofu pouch (yuck!)

But none of this is why I came out of FunMon retirement to join the Fun Monday festivities this week, the reason I signed up was to right (what I perceive to be) a wrong that has been bothering me for a while. You may recall that we celebrated FunMon's first anniversary not long ago, where accolades were given to Vicki (and rightly so) for coming up with the idea, and to a lesser extent myself for working with Vicki on the details, and to Erik for coming up with the name. However, overlooked at the time were the efforts of two long time Fun Monday participants who have put in significant effort over the past year.

I'm talking about ChrisB, who for as long as I can remember has posted a link to the current FunMon host on her sidebar (something that has helped innumerable folks) and Robin, who has produced not only the story behind Fun Monday, but also a list of past topics to help those who have taken on the task. So if you haven't visited them yet, don't forget to acknowledge them when you do. UPDATE..talk about an oversight! ChrisB just reminded me that her Grandson (Beccy's son) Dillon made the first FunMon logo that we used for almost a year. I had forgotten about that, oops.

[1] When I was looking for references for this post, I came across quite a few sites debating this very issue. At the time of my orginial post, some bonehead from South Africa with a creepy obsession (not so much with the actual events, but rather for the film about it), mistook my blog for a place that actually gave a shit about the whole thing, and proceeded to engage in an endless and relentless debate, thereby becoming the first and only person ever to be banned from the Dingo.

[2] Did she really thing she fooled anyone when she played on old Rabbi in Angels in America? (another total wankfest, designed solely to stroke the actors' egos).

[3] It wasn't really a third rate movie, it got a bunch of nominations, but only one Oscar nomination - for Streep (who put in a pretty ordinary performace), despite Fred Schepisi (the Australian director) getting 5 nominations from various bodies (what else is new). Same thing happened with Driving Miss Daisy.

[4] I tried to find the news clip that I have seen hundreds of times since 1980, but unfortunately the only place I found it was in the National Film Archives, and they wanted money for it. Bizarrely, it was on TV just a few nights ago (I should have taped it then). But here's some stuff about The Trial and background. And here's a  few more references if you're interested.

Fun Monday #46

Funmondaylogo Kitten (Kitten's homeschool)  is today's lovely hostess for Fun Monday.  She wants to know about our house and the street on which we live. (thanks Pam, I copied your intro)

I actually do know a bit of the history behind my place which I think is prett unusual unless you either built or bought your house new, and while it isn't very exciting, it is a little interesting. I'm not expecting to win a prize for  either the oldest or the best looking house, but I'm fine with that because I'm happy with my little house on the prairie (actually it's on the Liverpool Plains)

Let's start with the house...
1_house_2
The house is nothing special, but it is very comfortable and I have no near neighbours. It was built in 1967 by Frank Heyman for his farmhand and family. I got to know Frank very well, as he and his wife Elanore lived on the neighbouring property (I actually met the farmhand too, who has long since retired). I learned quite a bit about the house from Frank, but I learned much more about the history of the region from Elanore when I used to go an visit her after Frank died last year (he was 80 years old and was born in the house he and Elanore lived in.

The roof, as you may have noticed, is corrugated iron. Corrugated iron is an icon of outback life, along with blowflies and outside dunnies (I have plenty of flies, but at least my toilet is inside). There's not much more to say about the house except that it is solid, straight, and is made of cyprus pine (which the termites don't like). It's not connected to either town water or sewer and has no garbage collection, which actually makes it pretty cheap to live in

Now, the road (and this is where it gets interesting)...
2_road

I suppose the first thing that pops into my mind when I look at this picture (that I took five minutes ago) is "How come there's lines painted on such small road in the middle of nowhere?" The answer is simple really, even though now my road is only 7 kms long and has only one other house on it, 30 years ago when my house was built, it was in fact part of the New England Highway.

But not long after the house was completed, they commenced work on the a new route, so for the past 25 years it has been a rather quiet little outback road, used mostly by those who live on it and the occasional cattle truck.

And finally, a little about the region...
4_aerial

The land my house sits on, was originally part of Warrah Station (that link gives a short history), which was over 250,000 acres, but over the years was subdivided to the point where apart fro the main Station itself (which was still fairly large), most properties were around the 40-60 thousand acres. Frank's father owned one of the 60 thousand acre properties, but by the time Frank retired is was only around 10 thousand acres. Rohan (the name of Brett's property) goes about 7 miles into the distance, 3 miles to the right of the picture and about a mile to the left.

When Frank retired he sold the bulk of what was left to my neighbour Brett (who I bought my house off), he decided that he wanted to build a bigger home for his young family on the other side of the highway (his property straddles the New England Hwy). So he cut off a few acres around the house and sold the house and land to me, and I'm glad he did.

Now I suppose you could ask how I can settle for living in a small fibro and iron place three hours from the nearest beach?  Again, the answer is simple...we also have this place ten minutes from here, but I don't go there much, as I prefer it where I am (too many neighbours on the Coast), and MDW usually comes up here anyway.

Have a Fun Monday.

Fun Monday #45

Funmondaylogo This week Kaytabug has gotten all Christmassy and wants to see our favourite Christmas ornament. I never cut and paste the instructions, but I think it can be any kind of ornament, not just one for a tree, I could be mistaken but eh, so what.

It was very difficult to choose my favourite ornament because I've got two (seriously, I've only got two ornaments up here, all the rest are on the Coast). In the end I couldn't decide between them so I'm showing both of them. We got these ling before we got Belle...

Vet_006

Now, you know me, one photo is never enough, so here's what you can do if you decide not to take a slice off the earth's lungs...
Dalnott_184  Img_0010
The one on the left was in Oz and is a Norfolk Pine, the one on the right was in the US and is some sort of Conifer, in either case you get the smell of a real tree and several years use before they get too big. The Conifer looks a little undressed because we left all the ornaments in Oz.

And finally, some Christmas candles, and this plastic thing that you stick on your fridge (I love this guy!)...

Well that's it for me, I hope you have Fun Monday.

Fun Monday #44

Funmondaylogo I'd like thank Robinella (no, I'd really like to thank Robinella) for coming up with such a low fuss assignment for this week's Fun Monday.  It's so low maintenance that this is one of the rare occasions that I'm actually doing a cut (well, technically it's a copy) and paste of the instructions.

"In honour of exhaustion, colour and self-love, I present you with this week’s assignment. I want you to dig through your blog files and show us your best effort. Why you consider it your best is up to you. C’mon, you know you have a favourite - show it to me one more time." (sorry, I just had to add those 'u's, I can't help myself).

Because I got off so lightly, I've actually reproduced it right here so that you don't have to follow a link to it (I'm considerate that way, plus I turn comments off after three weeks anyway). The only changes I've made to the original post were to fix a couple of spelling errors and to include a couple of links for the sake of detail everything else is just as bad as it was back in July 2006. In a sign of the times, it looks like the book shop /cafe has disappeared and has been replaced by an online store.

For those of you who have already read this post, or if you just don't have time, or if you're just sick of reading after last month (and we all know what I'm talking about) here's a little something that I've "bean" working on that's in keeping with today's story. My new turbo boosted bike.

OK, that should be enough words to make this post look respectable (the original was shorter than I remembered), here is my effort....

This may be a long post so if you're like me and have a short attention span, maybe one of the posts with pictures would be a better option.

Although I've only been reading blogs for a short time, less than a month in fact, one thing I have noticed is that people love an embarrassing story (I think its called schadenfruede). While this is nowhere near as embarrassing as some that I've read (if you're reading this Ree**, yes I'm talking about you and the wig fiasco), it does make me laugh when I think about it.

A long time ago in a land far away there was a young married couple (that would be me and My Darling Wife, living in San Jose). One day they decided to go to the mall, not any mall but an upmarket one called the Pruneyard, in Campbell CA. This mall wasn't frequented by those who thought Kmart was a really splendid way to spend the day, but rather by those who could read. I make this distinction because there was a combination bookstore/coffee shop called The Upstart Crow where the cool people hung out reading books, indulging in conversation and drinking java. The coolest of the cool hung out in the outdoor garden area at the back of the store.

We had been out to lunch earlier in the day (Mexican, I mean this is SJ) and thought it would be good to get some 'mallersize', i.e. go for a walk around the mall. After an hour or so of window shopping, ice-creams and cokes we decided it was time to head back home.

All along the outside wall at the back of the mall was a hedge about 6 ft tall (all, wall, mall, tall, maybe this should be a poem). Back to the hedge, which we were walking alongside on the way to our car. At this point I felt the effects of both the beans and the coke-cola, both wanted to cast off some gas but in different directions.

Now you have to realise that we had only been married a couple of years and I was still trying to come up with ways to impress MDW, and thought "hey what better way to show her that I'm a real man then to burp and fart at the same time". So I decided to really exert some pressure and get some decent resonance happening, after all, we were out in the carpark and there was no-one around.

So, bracing myself I let fly. Talk about resonance! I got so much pressure in each direction that my butt cheeks were rippling and my chest was rattling. Boy was I proud of that effort! That is, of course, until the echoes died down and right at that exact moment I found myself at a break in the hedge, which unfortunately turned out not to be simply a break in the hedge but, in fact the back entrance to the Upstart Crow. Or in other words, I found myself looking directly at about 35 stunned pairs of eyes staring directly back at me from the outdoor seating area for the cafe.

** There used to be a link there, but I took it out because it was to Ree's old Blogger blog.

Fun Monday #43

Funmondaylogo_2 This Fun Monday is brought to us by Blue Momma, who seems to live in a fishbowl, she wants to see unfinished projects. At first I just resigned myself to missing out on this one, as I really don't have any unfinished projects. It's not that I finish all my projects, it more that I'm too lazy to start them in the first place. But then I remembered the tree!

This tree was on its last legs when I bought this place, it died shortly after I moved in (a combination of the drought and horses ring-barking it eventually killed it). So I decided to put it to good use. I've got another winter left.

Here we have me moving stuff up from the Coast, you can see the tree next to my trailer. At this stage it still had some bark on it...Trailer_05_2

This series was when I cut down the first of it's four main trunks two winters ago...

Here's a picture of how it looked this winter after I had cut down the second of the trunks and was preparing to cut down the third...
Mist_010

And this is what I want it for...
Mist_014Mist_015

A combination of three factors 1) the size of the tree, 2) the efficiency of my slow combustion heater, and 3) the relatively mild winters her in Oz, means that I don't need to get all that much wood. In fact one trunk and a few fallen branches will pretty much do it for me.

I only go through about three of these per winter...
Wood_008

Tree_3 I thought I should probably do a current photo to show why this is an unfinished project, so I just now swivelled around on my gas lifting, high backed, tilting manager's chair that I use for my computing and took this photo. This is how the tree looks as of 30 seconds ago (the time taken to to type this). Next year it should be gone. I'm leaving the stump up to about waist height as it will make a good work bench.

I've left this particular trunk until last as it's the one that is most likely to demolish my shed, so I'm taking some time to figure out how to do it without ending up on Funniest Home Videos.

Enjoy your Fun Monday.

YadaYadaYada post #26

Update: It never ceases to amaze me that people ask rather than search (I mean it's less keystrokes to simply type the term into the search bar than it is to type the question), however for the sake of expediency, here's the explanation of Ring-barking.

Fun Monday #42

Fun_monday_2 I'm writing this Fun Monday post before I go to to bed as I'll be leaving for the farm early tomorrow, and may not get a chance to do it later. This week Karisma wants us to embarrass ourselves with a funny story from when we were younger. I thought for a while and then remembered this episode.

Touk_08 This is a picture of just about the only holiday we ever had that didn't involve staying at my grandmother's place, which was always filled with tension, because my mother and my Grandmother (her MIL) really didn't like each other at all. So for this one and only solo holiday, Mum and Dad went to great lengths to keep the location of our rented lakeside house a secret, as it was only 25 miles from where Gran lived (and ironically only about half a mile from where MDW and I bought our first home).  It didn't help, she found us anyway. We're talking about a woman who raised four children virtually alone, lost her husband in the war, and worked as a cook on various sheep stations during shearing season. Nothing could stop her.

But this story isn't about her, it's about me (as per instructions). The photo on the right shows my mother, me and my two brothers in the yard of the house dad rented for a week. Looks idyllic doesn't it?  Sadly that was soon about to change, and we're about to find out  why.

My mother really didn't like the water very much, and it took some heavy duty cajoling for Dad to convince her to get in the canoe. And that was probably all the more reason for me not to sneak into the water behind her and tip her out of the canoe about 90 seconds after this photo was taken.

I still think it was the funniest thing I ever did, she however, went to her grave without ever really forgiving me. Oh well.

**If you look closely at the picture, you may just see the thought being formulated (I'm the little guy just behind mum)...

Pseudo Fun Monday

Fun_monday_2 I didn't think I'd be able to play Fun Monday this week, as after finally  deciphering the instructions, I realised that for me it would simply be another "view from my front door" or even "view from my back door" post, which I've done four of so far for FM. This is not a criticism of the assignment, which if my house was a bit bigger would have been a really good one for me. No, the problem is at this end.

However, I've decided that just about everyone plays pretty loose with the rules of the assignments so that's what I'll do.  I'm posting a few pictures of what I see when I stand 30 paces away from my computer. These pictures were not taken specifically for the assignment but roughly satisfy the criteria.

Fun Monday #39

Fun_monday_2 Here we are again, Monday here and some other day there! This week's it's brought to you by the very candid Karina. She wants to see what see can't leave home without, all that essential stuff that if you forgot to bring it with you, you'd die immediately and the vulchers would tear the flesh from your bones. I'm not quite sure that's exactly what she said, but it's pretty damn close.

Funmonday39_015 Being a guy, I don't really take that much with me under normal circumstances, in fact all I take are these three things. My keys (house and car), my wallet and my sunglasses which are prescription polarised Mako glasses that I got for playing golf but now use when I drive the car. I don't drive a t night (I haven't for over four years).

But it would be a pretty sorry post if that's all I did now wouldn't it. SO what I'm about to show you is what I take whenever I go to the Coast. I never take any clothes because I have what I need already down there, but there are a few things that I use all the time so when I'm leaving the house for more than a day, or if I'm going to be doing something far from home and will be gone all day, this stuff always comes too.

I've had this daypack for a few years now and it suits me perfectly, it has three compartments, the font one that is featured in the closeup that has heaps of pockets, one the same size that I put my big camera and other valuable stuff in, and a big one at the back in case I need to take a change of clothes (if I'm not staying on the Coast).

Fm39_001  Fm39_002

Now we get to the detail, on most cases all that I take in the pack are these...

Fm39_003_5

You have to click on the big photo, I did something clever.

I don't have to go looking for all my treasures when I go to the Coast, they all live in one place which is here...

Fm39_006_3

And to put it into perspective...

Fm39_007_2

I hope you all have a fun Monday.

Seems I didn't think this one through, most of my good t-shirts and caps are on the Coast, d'oh! Plus I won't really be able to participate on the day to as I have to drive to the Coast to get my car fixed, so I'll be out of the loop for a couple of days. MDW has dialup so there's no way I'm going to go and check out 50+ posts containing mainly graphics! I will get around to everyone eventually though.

Here's my half-assed effort...

These two pictures of the Bad Boy, are from a genuine promotional Tee shirt for a bail bond company in San Jose. The first picture is of the chest graphic and is about the size of a pocket, the second one is of the back and takes up the whole back side. I love this tee, I had another one in red but it eventually bit the bullet.

Quick update, I forgot these...

The one with me in it, is a night shirt that MDW gave me for Christmas, the World Series one is from the Series that was cancelled because of an Earthquake, and the Coasties Cup was from when I was President of the League. And yes, that is a dog in the picture, I got tired of trying to keep her off it.

It's probably too late to help you, but I found that putting the t-shirts on a pillow made them easier to photograph.

Have a Fun Monday and I'll see you when I get back.

Fun Monday #38 Assignment and Signup sheet.

The link to this post has been at the top of the sidebar all week, with instructions to where it was, appearing in several posts (it was done that way because I don't like sticky posts, it's just a personal preference), yet despite all that, there are still some people yelling at me that they don't know what the assignment is!

So far the list of participants is...

Molly, Holtie, Blue Momma, Jenni in KS, Fianna, Min, Robin, Junebug, Stephanie, ChrisB, Kila, Kaytabug, Sandy, Laurie, Retrohipster, Karisma, Lisa, Pam, Beckie, Anglophile Football Fan, Sirdar, Janet, Robin in CA, Mommyca, Joy T, Kerith, Sayre, Katie(kitten), her indoors, Alix, Nikki, Dawn, Susan, Karina, Tiggerlane, Hootin' Anni, Bethany, Julie, Beth, My4kids, Hayden, AlisonwonderlandEmma, Bindi, AreWeThereYetMom, Arkansas Songbird, SwampAngel65, Lisa, jill, Debs, Pamela, Katie,

For those who couldn't figure out the instructions, here's the original assignment in all its glory....

As you already know, I'm hosting next week's Fun Monday. Before we go too far, I feel that I need to do a little explaining about what Fun Monday is and isn't. For starters it isn't a democracy! The host is in charge and what they say goes, so don't expect no fancy schmanzy polls to decide what the assignment will be, I give the assignments here!

As to what Fun Monday is, well its a show and tell that gives everyone at least one day a week where they can produce a post with out having to come up with an idea. Recently there has been a tendency to lean towards wordy stuff requiring lots of adjectives, adverbs and other such grammatical terms. But a good Fun Monday is one where you done have to do much thinking. Or to put it another way, one that lends itself to photos.

As to this weeks assignment (I didn't really need to start the paragraph with 'as' but then I thought "hey why not bat a thousand!", for the non Americans I thought "hey why not go for a hat trick!"), it's time we got some culture back into Fun Monday, or more specifically 'Art Appreciation'. So next weeks assignment should you choose to accept it, is to show us some good interesting garment art.

WTF!?!?! What is he talking about?? I'm talking about tee shirts, baseball caps, hoodies or any article of clothing that has graphics on it. It's up to how how many you include, as well as whether you include the actual garment or just the graphic. Think about it, I'm sure you have something in your house. You don't even need words for this one, but that doesn't mean you can't use them.

If you do sign up, let's not all cut an paste this whole thing at the top of our posts, instead how about using the following...

This week's Fun Monday is being hosted by WT, he wants to see some clothing art. That's tee shirts, baseball caps, hoodies, sports uniforms or any bit of clothing that you or your kids own that has interesting, funny or artistic graphics.

Just a few minor points:

  • If you're not going to post don't sign up!
  • If you're a commercial venture, piss off.
  • If you can't post for some reason, let people know.
  • If you're hosting a giveaway, then go away.
  • Unless you're Swampy, post only the assignment.

The Host for next week is the luverly Karina. (Thanks for being candid, Karina.)

Fun Monday #37

Fun_monday_2 This week's event is hosted by Janet (thanks, you did a great job), but wait there's more...I'm hosting next week, so follow the instructions at the end of this post. But this week it's all about how you met your whatever. I almost didn't sign up as I just recently wrote a post about this very thing (as part of a series I'm doing), but then it dawned on me "Are you crazy?! All you have to do is cut and paste and you're done!".

So that's exactly what I've done. But I still have a nagging fear that there's a possibility that parallel worlds could collide. What this means is that if you're a regular Dingo reader, you are now officially ahead of schedule, if you're a regular Fun Mondayer, you're in for a real literary treat! And god help us all if a regular Dingo reader, a Fun Mondayer and regular Dingo reader who usually does Fun Monday all click on my blog at the same time! There's no telling what may happen, but my guess is that the entire blogosphere could implode.

Oh just one more thing, I found a photo that illustrates the whole seat cover thing, the seats in the photo are the seat covers in the story, so you can now appreciate how hard it was putting them on. Read on...

It was a dark and stormy night. Or it would have been if it wasn't a beautiful balmy Sunday afternoon in the middle of a Californian Spring. Truth be told, there was nary a cloud to be seen (sorry, there's still a few pirate words hanging around), but a storm was brewing inside the house, one that would change my life forever.

ET and I were doing what we did best, smoking waccy tabbacy and idling away the hours talking about the things we should be doing, when suddenly the phone rang (ok, it didn't ring any more of a sudden than it usually did, but this is a story, so everything has to have an adjective, or in this case an adverb). It was MDW. Both ET and Mrs ET (although she wasn't at the time), had known MDW (who also wasn't yet) for a long time, in fact ET had travelled extensively with her and Chuck (maybe more on him later) in South East Asia.

This shared experience was not looked upon fondly by Mrs ET, who was at the time trying to ensnare ET on a long term basis, so a phone call from MDW was about as welcome as a fart in a space suit. There was an ensuing conversation between ET and Mrs ET full of hushed tones and strained looks, with the upshot being the statement to me to the effect that "MDW needs you to go and help her put some carseat covers on". Now if you're anything like me (and even if you're not), you'd be thinking 1) why would she need me, she doesn't even know me and/or, 2) why would she need help putting carseat covers on?

As it happens, she didn't ask for me because understandably, in much the same way as I didn't know her, she didn't know me too. (now that's some English right there!) What had transpired was that Mrs ET put her foot down, and ET put his in his mouth and volunteered me for the job to get Mrs ET off his back (if you knew Mrs ET you'd know this was not a comfortable position to be in, we're talking serious back strain). So it was with high hopes and a hard member that I threw my bike in back of ET's pickup and we headed to MDW's apartment, where ET dropped me and my bike off, and then took off like the scurvy bilge rat he is!

La83_0023 Both my high hopes and my hard member were dashed when I realised that MDW really did just need a hand getting the seat covers on, and it wasn't simply an elaborate ploy to get her some man meat. But the deed was done and here I was, plus there's no way Mrs ET would have ever believed that MDW wasn't after her fella, so it was probably all for the best. Anyway, these bastards weren't your usual stretch terry towelling numbers, they were the real deal, made out of the same vinyl as the originals and were even the same colour. They were, in fact, a DIY reupholstering kit that required the removal of the seats and a couple of hours of genuine grunt work!

However, and if you've been reading me for any length of time you know there's always a however, we eventually got them on and then retired to her apartment for some refreshments and stimulating conversation. Well, at least that's how I saw it...

Ok, wasn't that fun wasn't it! After you've left a nice comment, click on the link at the top of the right hand sidebar to check out the assignment for next week.

Fun Monday #36

Fun_monday_2 The inimitable Pamela from the Dust will Wait (who incidentally is possibly the nicest blogger ever to have blogged) is hosting this week. Pam has stepped it up a bit form "show me your front yard" to "show me where you live", which I think is a spiffy idea!

I will confess that I've had a bit going on lately, so I didn't go out and take pictures specifically for the Fun Monday post, which I normally do. But hey, it's not like someone came and changed all the landscape over night!

1. My place form across the field...

2. Looking left from my driveway...

3. Rocks in my backyard...

6. Two pictures of the same tree...
Fm6 100_1969
The first was taken in the middle of a heavy storm when the clouds opened just enough for the sun to light up my place, the second is why I don't cut it down.

7. Some cattle grazing 100 yards form my driveway...

8. Some pig shooters stopped for a chat (again, taken from my front porch)...

If you look closely, you can see the frames on the back of the two trucks on the left, they have wild pigs on them.

SO there you have it, not all that spectacular, but that's part of the reason I like it here...it doesn't attract crowds!
